Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy most commonly used for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but it is also used in education, healthcare, organizational management, and other settings. It uses scientific principles of learning and behavior to increase independent functional skills - such as communication, social interaction, and self-care - and reduce behaviors that interfere with daily life. ABA should focus on collaboration to establish individualized goals, a person-centered approach, be neurodiversity affirming and use data-driven decision making. ABA is supported by decades of research and recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
-
While ABA is most frequently used with children who have autism, the principles of ABA are also applied to support individuals of all ages with ADHD, developmental delays, and other behavioral or learning challenges. An evaluation will help determine whether ABA is the right approach for your child.
-
Yes - and combining them is often highly effective. ABA and speech therapy share many overlapping goals, particularly around functional communication and social language. Our therapists collaborate across disciplines so that strategies are consistent and goals build on each other.
-
ABA intensity varies by child. Some children benefit from a few focused hours per week; others with more significant deficits may receive more intensive and comprehensive programming. Recommendations are based on a functional behavior assessment (FBA). We strive to work together with families to build a schedule that meets their clinical needs while fitting your family's life.
-
ABA sessions are structured but can feel like play. A trained Behavior Technician or Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works one-on-one with your child using positive reinforcement and other evidence-based strategies according to the behavior intervention treatment plan to encourage desired behaviors and skills. Sessions may include table work, naturalistic play-based activities, and real-life practice of everyday skills in the home, clinic or various community settings.
-
n most U.S. states, insurance plans are required by law to cover ABA therapy for children with an autism diagnosis. Coverage requirements and specifics vary by state and plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your benefits, and our team can provide documentation to support authorization requests.
-
Duration depends on individual goals and rate of progress. Some families work with ABA therapists for one to two years to address specific skill areas; others continue longer. Goals are reviewed regularly and the program evolves as your child grows. The ultimate goal of ABA is for the individual to develop functional skills and become more independent in their day-to-day life, which allows ABA services to fade out.
-
ABA therapy is supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), who completes the functional behavior assessment, designs the treatment plan and monitors progress. Day-to-day therapy is typically delivered by a trained Behavior Technician or a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) under BCBA supervision. Case Managers are Master’s Level mid-tier supervisors who also may deliver direct services and/or supervision for some cases. Regional Supervisors and Regional Directors oversee all cases within their region to ensure all treatment plans are in compliance and effectively meeting the individual needs of the client. Our team is fully trained and committed to providing quality, ethical, and family-centered care.
-
Parent involvement is a critical part of effective ABA programs. You will receive regular progress updates and parent education/training on how to reinforce skills and implement strategies according to the treatment plan outside of structured sessions. Caregiver training helps ensure that what your child learns in therapy carries over into everyday life - at home, at school, and in the community.
-
Assessing progress in ABA is data-driven. Behavior Technicians collect objective data during every session. This allows the Clinical Supervisor/BCBA to track trends over time, and review goals regularly with families. You should see documented progress toward individualized goals. If progress stalls, the team will analyze the data and adjust the approach. Collaboration among all team members is key to ensuring programs are successful & effective or modified, as needed.
